Summer is Here at Oddyssea in Half Moon Bay

The flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, frogs are croaking, and daylight hours are getting longer. That can mean only one thing, summer is right around the corner!

In preparation for the summer season, we thought we’d share summer hours sooner rather than later. These hours/days will be in effect May 30th to September 5th. Here are the highlights:

We hope you’ll take advantage of our summer hours to come out to Half Moon Bay and have some fun!

Once the summer season wanes, our hours will return to normal (Daily 11-5p, Closed Wednesday for the Shop and Open Sa/Su 11-5p for the Garden.

Pocket Watch Reactor

April 1st, 2016 | Lesley

Oddyssea exclusive Pocket Watch Reactor

Have you ever been in a situation where you just needed a “little more power?” Vehicle stuck in a rut, ship stranded at sea with no propulsion, power outage when hosting a dinner party for VIPs? Well, here at Oddyssea Labs we’ve helped find solutions for these problems by putting the power of the atom in your pocket.

That’s right, we’ve cracked the atomic code in such a way that it can be transported easily and safely in pocket watch form. But wait, there’s more. Using our special adapters, this handy gadget can seamlessly plug into your car, your boat, your airplane, your drone, your home generator, or anywhere else you might need a little more power to provide that little extra boost to get you over the finish line.

In addition to a nearly limitless power supply, this device also acts as an atomic clock and compass.

Unfortunately, our supply is VERY limited and the Pocket Watch Reactor will be available only on April 1, 2016 while supplies last. Come on down and get your own Pocket Watch Reactor!

DIY Battery

Components used in DIY Battery activity at Oddyssea in Half Moon BayLED Glowing from DIY Battery activity at Oddyssea in Half Moon Bay

Batteries are modern marvels, and they’ve certainly advanced in the years since the Baghdad Battery to the point where large infrastructures and vehicles can use the energy stored in batteries for useful work. We’ve been fascinated with batteries for sometime and had that interest rekindled at one of the local schools science fair this year.

The result is the Oddyssea DIY Battery Kit where one combines common objects like pennies act as cathodes, zinc washers act as annodes, and common paper soaked in a vinegar cancer electrolyte enables current to flow. Fun stuff we think. We’ve added a low voltage LED light so that when your battery is correctly assembled you’ll have a visual signal of current. It’s something of a smaller and more subtle activity than we usually host in the garden, but we’re hoping you’ll enjoy it.

The garden is open 12-4p Sat/Sun weather permitting and this is but one of the fun things you can do when you visit. We hope to see you soon!

Create a Holiday Ornament

December 4th, 2015 | Lesley

Create your own Holiday Ornament at Oddyssea in Half Moon Bay California

Sure, you can go buy an ornament to hang on the old tree, but why do that when you can make your very own? Our featured activity is DIY Holiday Ornament where your result is limited only by your imagination.

We provide you with a clear glass ornament, quick drying alcohol paints, colored pens, and the piece de resistance, canned air. Yep, you read that right. Our holiday ornaments call for the use of the paints inside the ornament and while they are still wet, blowing into the ornament with a quick blast or two of compressed air. This guarantees a beautiful and unique pattern for your ornament. You can further adorn your creation using colored pens on the outside of the ornament. Come on over and try it!

We will be open in the Garden weekends and selected weekdays through January 2nd, 2019. Check our holiday hours to see the schedule – this is, of course, weather permitting!

Find your Fortune (Pearl)

Find your Fortune Pearl at Oddyssea in Half Moon Bay

One of the things we’ve always tried to do at Oddyssea is to make our activities informative and fun. With our November featured activity, we think we might have hit the nail on the head: Fortune Pearl.

Each freshwater oyster has been specially cultivated to insure that there is a pearl inside. But, you have to open the oyster to determine the size, shape, and color of your pearl. Now, since pearls can be valuable, we think of these as a “small fortune.” But wait, there’s more, we also wanted to inject some fun into the activity so we also include a cookie like “fortune” hand harvested from our resident oracle, Zoltar the Great.

Once you have your pearl and your fortune, package them up in a micro glass bottle with a cork and you’re good to go!

Oddyssea Outside Garden is open weekends throughout the school year (weather permitting) and we offer many different activities and adventures each week. Come on over for a visit!

Pumpkin Festival 2015

October 8th, 2015 | Lesley

Pumpkin Festival Time

It’s difficult to believe, but Pumpkin Festival is upon is once again. Yes, that time of year when orange rules and 200,000 of our closest friends come to visit Half Moon Bay for the Pumpkin Festival.

This year, we’re going to do something a little different from our prior Festival years. First off, Oddyssea Inside, the shop, will be closed on October 17/18 during the Festival. However, the Garden, Oddyssea Outside, will be open for the entire Festival 9a-5p both days and here’s what we’ll be doing:

We’re pretty excited by the line-up and hope you are too. As a reminder, the Garden runs on the Doubloon system. Doubloons purchased previously are always good in the Garden (as are Doubloons purchased at the Festival valid for future usage.) At the Festival, we will be selling 2 packs for $6, 4 packs for $10, and 8 packs for $20. All activities are 2 Doubloons (Cannonball Run uses two racers for 1 Doubloon each) Drinks and Candy are 1 Doubloon, and Activity Kits To Go are 8 Doubloons.

We hope you come out this year and get your Pumpkin On! Look for the Jolly Roger flying in a garden with a shipwreck to find us (or, use a boring old GPS and punch in 601 Main St.)

Christopher Marley – Featured Artist

September 3rd, 2015 | Lesley

Tiger Nautilus featured at Oddyssea in Half Moon Bay

A few months ago one of our visitors suggested we look into work of Christopher Marley and we’re thankful for the recommendation. Mr. Marley creates stunning installations using natural products like insects and shells. Once we saw his work, we knew we wanted to feature his work in the shop at some point.

Suffice to say, that point is now. Through the end of the year, we’re hosting a half dozen works featuring sea shells and insects on the wall of our Create Room inside the shop. We encourage you to come check out Marley’s work first-hand; while the images are compelling, they pale in comparison to the in-person experience.

The shop is open 11a-5p Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 10a-6p Saturday.

Chowder Mobile at July Passegiatta

July 19th, 2015 | Lesley

Sam's Chowder Mobile in the Oddyssea Outside Garden on Passegiatta July 31, 2015 6-9p

We are honored and delighted to be able to host Sam’s Chowder House’s Chowder Mobile Friday July 31, 2015 for Passegiatta, 6-8p. If you haven’t experienced the culinary delights of the Chowder Mobile, don’t walk, run to the Oddyssea Garden and get your chow on. This food truck was voted “Best Food Truck” by the folks at Bay Area A-List in 2015 and we can tell you, that title was earned and well deserved.

Fresh fish and chips, lobster rolls, Po’ Boys, calamari, and of course, delicious clam chowder are on the menu. Read more about what’s typically available here at the ChowderMobile web site. We had the good purchase lexapro online fortune to have the Chowder Mobile in the garden in May for a private event and found the food delicious and the crew a bunch of fun.

What could be better than great food from Sam’s, a stroll along Main Street in historic downtown Half Moon Bay, and all the fun activities and adventures offer in our garden? We hope to see you on Friday July 31, 2015 so you can experience the Chowder Mobile first-hand.

Please note: The Passegiatta Passaporto is valid at Sam’s on Highway 1, but cannot be used with the Chowder Mobile.
