One of the friends of the store, John Hitchcock who leads Marketing at Avantica, wrote a great article explaining how we’ve been taking the principles of Agile and applying them to the shop. It’s worth a read. Here’s a short excerpt:
On July 14, 2012, Oddyssea, a first-of-its-kind retailer, opened in Half Moon Bay, Calif. Equal parts science, nature, games, magic and furnishings, with a generous dash of whimsy, Oddyssea thematically is dedicated to exploring, creating and discovering. What’s most interesting about the Oddyssea retail experience is it was conceptualized, designed, implemented and continues to operate using Agile. The Agile software engineering model. But Agile is unrelated to the store’s point of sale, inventory management or financial systems. Rather, it’s completely focused on defining the retail experience.
Just goes to show you that generalization across industries can be a good thing. Thanks John for writing this!

Here’s one of our new favorite things at the shop. Stop by and see it in person, it’s highly entertaining!
And a reminder, it’s Talk Like a Pirate Day tomorrow. Shiver your timbers and splice the mainbrace, come on down to loot some treasure at the shop and we’ll pay the sales tax on your booty!

Well, it had to happen sometime and Saturday it is. We will move from beta mode to release mode for the shop. View it as Oddyssea 1.0.
Yes, it’s true we’ve been “open” since mid-July, but much of what we’ve been doing is learning how to create great experiences for our visitors and function as a competent business. We’re still learning, but we think we have reached sufficient competence to “release” the store into operations mode.
So, come join us. We’ll cut the ribbon at 11am September, 15th on the front steps. It should be fun.
To celebrate, we’ll offer $1 off any of our solar gadgets including butterflies, dragonflies, and petals.
We hope to see you Saturday!

Welcome to the Oddyssea Newsletter!
We will send these communications periodically to share new information with you. In this week’s edition, we will cover our first 30 days of operations, the 2012 Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Solar Butterflies, and Terrarium Workshops.
Since we opened our doors in trial mode July 14th, 2012, we’ve seen quite a bit of change and have learned a ton about how to make the shop a compelling experience for you. Read more about this in our blog entry The First 30 Days.
Don’t forget, September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. If you visit the shop on the 19th and talk like a pirate during your purchase, we will pay the sales tax on your booty. Arr me maties, put off the deck swabbin’ and come shiver your timbers at Oddyssea.
The weekend of October 13 & 14th brings the 42nd Annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival to downtown Half Moon Bay. We’ll be open and kicking with a few special features including temporary tattoos. We hope to see you over the festival weekend.
Would you like to extend the summer a little longer? Our solar butterflies, available in Monarch or Yellow Swallowtail flavors, can do just that for you. Mention this newsletter and you can take one home for $12, a special discount from our normal price of $13.
Many of you signed up for this list specifically because of your interest in terrariums, thank you! Well, we’re almost ready to run the inaugural terrarium workshop and are looking for the first 8 victims ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H make that volunteers to attend the first workshop. If you are interested, please send an email and we’ll follow-up with more detailed information.
That’s all we have for this edition, thank you for your patronage!
